Occlusion handles the physical, on-site work of a borehole disposal program: placing canisters at depth, watching over them once they're there, and keeping them retrievable for as long as regulators require. We bring oilfield-proven drilling, downhole tooling, and field operations discipline to this work.
Emplacement
We place canisters precisely at depth in the borehole using proven oilfield drilling, downhole tooling, and completions practices.
Monitoring
Once in place, we track canister condition and the surrounding environment continuously, from surface instrumentation down to the disposal zone, with a documented chain of custody.
Retrieval
Retrievability is a design requirement, not an afterthought. We use standard oil and gas practices, to bring canisters back out if a program ever calls for it.
How Deep Borehole Disposal Works
Deep borehole disposal places used nuclear fuel far below the water table, inside rock formations that have held stable for millions of years. A well is drilled deep underground and turned horizontal; sealed canisters are placed end-to-end along that horizontal section, hundreds of meters beneath the surface, with a small footprint above ground. That depth and geology do most of the work of long-term isolation.
Occlusion partners with Deep Isolation on the underlying disposal technology. Our team executes the on-site work — emplacement, monitoring, and retrieval readiness — using drilling, downhole tooling, and field procedures adapted from decades of oilfield operations.
Built on Natural and Engineered Barriers
The disposal zone sits hundreds of meters below any source of drinking water, in rock that has stayed geologically stable for millions of years. Engineered canisters and borehole seals add a second layer of protection on top of that natural isolation, and continuous monitoring gives an ongoing, verifiable record that containment is holding.
Occlusion's role in deep borehole disposal builds directly on decades of oilfield well work in Oklahoma and beyond, applied to a new kind of subsurface program with the same standards for precision, documentation, and accountability.
